School is officially back in full swing and my head is still spinning at how quickly the summer blew by and that we’re already getting ready for football season, cooler temperatures, and earlier sunsets. BGCLC completed our largest summer program in history, which included Summer of Discovery at all three of our traditional Club locations; Fort Collins, Wellington, and Loveland. Over 300 middle and high school students visited countless local business partners to explore the various industries in Northern Colorado and learn more about the opportunities waiting for them after graduation. We also hosted weekly field trips for kids of all ages and created new experiences and memories that will last well into the school year and beyond.
As we transition back into the school day routine this month, our kids will be learning new classrooms and classmates, new teachers, and for some of them, a new Boys & Girls Club. Focusing on change as an opportunity can help ease fears and create excitement about what’s next. Adaptability is an important skill both to learn and teach in 2024 and our staff are constantly updating our program plans to keep kids feeling engaged and supported during their time with us. We’ll also be adding new behavioral health team members and leadership programming in the coming year as we continue to build positive places and spaces for tweens and teens navigating what’s next in their worlds.
When my 12-year-old son reluctantly stood on the front porch for his first day of 7th grade photo while the grandparents and I quickly snapped photos, I was reminded of the proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child”. Our team at BGCLC is that village for the over 2,000 youth and their families who walk through our doors each year. The support of our community partners, volunteers, and donors is an extension of that village and is critical to ensuring that we continue to be that safe and accessible home away from home for youth in Larimer County. We’re looking forward to another great school year and encourage you to connect with us for a Club tour to see our program in action and experience what makes Boys & Girls Clubs truly special and our staff the brightest in their field. Thank you for helping us ensure that great futures truly start here at BGCLC!

Congratulations to our 2024 Doing It Wright Winner: Andy Te Slaa!
This award is named in honor of Kathi Wright. Kathi helped to create the Boys & Girls Clubs of Larimer County’s first Club and held the role of Executive Director for more than 18 years. Kathi was known for her leadership, positivity, and dedication to BGCLC; therefore, this award is given each year to a staff member who exemplifies those traits. Congrats to this year’s recipient, Andy Te Slaa, Area Director! Andy is always looking for new and innovative ways to advance our organization and brings a solution-focused approach and positivity to every new challenge. Thank you for your incredible work!
What was your first reaction to winning the award?
My first thought was of Directors and Club staff. The truth is my job is made incredibly easy because of these people. Trusting in them to do the amazing job they do has allowed me to branch out and think of other ways to promote BGCLC.
What is the most rewarding part of working at BGCLC?
The obvious response would be impacting kids. However, I get so much joy out of seeing the staff grow.
What is your favorite memory of your time at BGCLC?
TURKEY BOWL! I love seeing all the clubs get together for cool events.
Program Highlight: Summer of Discovery Graduations
We are happy to announce that we had 128 graduates of our 2024 Summer of Discovery program!
Congratulations to our Fort Collins, Wellington, and Loveland-Pulliam middle school-aged members who worked so hard over the 8-week program.
This year, we expanded Summer of Discovery to our Loveland-Pulliam Club. Our Loveland-Pulliam staff shined this summer to bring this program to their Club for the first time!
Overall, we worked with 20 different community partners to provide 12 different workforce-related field trips. What a great year!

National Charity League Philanthropy Day
Allison Hines, BGCLC CEO, spoke on a panel with Kristi Briles, Respite Care Executive Director, and Amy Pezzani, Food Bank for Larimer County CEO, at the National Charity League of Fort Collins Philanthropy Day!
The panel was a fun way to celebrate female leadership in the sector and help encourage volunteerism. It was great to inspire future women leaders!
Thank you for having us, National Charity League. |
