April Newsletter

CEO Letter

Spring has officially sprung! I love my morning walks this time of year where the flowers are blooming, the birds are happily singing, and the air is starting to warm.  One definition of spring is a season of growth and development, which is synonymous with what we do here at BGCLC!

Since early 2020, we have exponentially grown our services to support Larimer County youth and our programs have developed into award-winning examples of excellence in our field.  We currently serve over 2,000 kids annually at 13 Clubs across our communities. While we are always encouraging fun, time spent at Club isn’t just about playing basketball and making slime (IYKYK). Through data-sharing partnerships with our local school districts, we know that youth are not only creating new friendships and experiences. They are also growing their literacy and math skills and showing increased test scores after participation in programs like Summer of Discovery.

We are gearing up for the largest summer program in our history, with over 1,000 youth enrolled to date!  And while we continue to focus on increasing our ability to support the youth who need us most, the funding landscape for this important work is shifting. The hard reality is that the federal grant dollars supporting much of our post-pandemic programming are fading away, while the need for places of belonging and academic support for our kids has not.

This year, our Spring Soiree is celebrating the potential of every child when they have the opportunity to Believe, Belong, and Bloom. Boys & Girls Clubs of Larimer County provides a safe space for our youth to take root with confidence and grow into their full potential.  Our community needs these spaces for kids and BGCLC needs the support of our community.

Please join us on May 31st for our biggest fundraiser of the year or make a gift today to support our high-quality programs like Summer of Discovery and Youth of the Year.  Donations are eligible for the Colorado Childcare Contribution Tax Credit and ensure that BGCLC can continue to provide scholarships to over 50% of our families. Most importantly, there is no better return on investment than the one we make in our children. Thank you!

With gratitude,

Chief Executive Officer

2020 Youth of the Year Winner Milayo Garner Discovers Her Path To Pediatric Medicine

Milayo Garner, an alumna of our Sage Homes Wellington Club, is forging ahead toward a career in pediatric medicine. She credits her time at BGCLC for helping to prepare her for what it takes.

In Milayo’s six years at Club, she took an active role, participating in community projects and Torch Club, a small-group leadership and service club for youth ages 10-13. In 2020, she won the Boys & Girls Clubs Larimer County Youth of the Year competition. Although the COVID pandemic ended her Club experience early, she left well equipped for her post- high school journey.

According to Milayo, the skills she learned at Club impacted both her educational and professional careers.

“Club programs gave me a lot of professional experience, which has prepared me for the jobs I’ve had since then. I also learned how to present myself professionally, and how to speak in front of a crowd.”

Inspired by her experience working with younger Club members, Milayo plans to fulfill her childhood dream of practicing pediatric medicine. Currently, she is studying biomedical sciences with a concentration in anatomy and physiology at Colorado State University (CSU).

BGCLC Hosts First County-Wide Art Show

For the past month, Club members from around the county participated in art shows at their Clubs. Youth and family members voted for the best art piece, and the finalists from each Club participated in our first ever County-Wide Art Show at the Lincoln Art Gallery in Loveland! What an amazing opportunity to celebrate our Club members’ unique creativity and talents.

Congratulations to the winners of the art show: Kiara (Sage Homes Wellington Club) with her Crochet Dragon, Mia (Lincoln Club) with her Paper Flowers, and Ryder (Riverview Club) with his Stingray.
