CEO Corner

Allison Hines, CEO, at Gem LakeAs the weather warms and the birds begin to sing loudly in the mornings, I immediately get excited about my favorite season – SUMMER! I love the abundance of sunshine, long days spent outside, and more time with friends and family at parks and backyard barbecues. As a full-time working parent, the approach of summer also brings some anxiety. What will my 5th-grade son do for the next three months?

Boys & Girls Clubs of Larimer County is already ramping up in anticipation of our busiest season of the year when our operating hours triple and the number of youth that we serve nearly doubles each day. Last summer, BGCLC served nearly 700 children per day across Larimer County, allowing parents to continue working and giving youth new experiences and learning opportunities outside of the classroom.

In 2023, our Summer of Discovery program will expand to serve middle school students at both our Fort Collins and Wellington Clubs. The program combines interactive workforce opportunities with hands-on learning experiences alongside local professionals. Not only did this program help prevent summer learning loss, but it has also led to very strong academic gains.

Data showed that youth enrolled in Summer of Discovery increased an equivalent of 7 weeks of school math instruction and 11 weeks of classroom reading instruction. WOW! And the best part? This program will be offered at no cost to families through our incredible partnership with Poudre School District and our very generous donors. Registration for this program is open, and space is available at both locations. Click here to register in Fort Collins, and here to register in Wellington.

Our upcoming fundraising events help to support our busy operations and family scholarships now and throughout the year. I hope to meet many of you at our Spring Soiree on June 9th or out on the links at our Fore the Kids Golf Classic on July 17th. Happy Summer!

With Gratitude,

Allison Hines

Boys & Girls Clubs of Larimer County Parent Advocates for Out-of-School Programming

Rebekka Dailey speaking on out-of-school programs at a press conferenceBoys & Girls Clubs of Colorado has been doing important advocacy work on the state level to increase awareness of the importance of out-of-school programming for youth. At a press conference in March with Governor Polis, Wellington Trustee and BGCLC parent Rebekka Dailey spoke earnestly about what BGCLC has meant to her family.

She stated, “Increasing access to after-school programs like the one we have participated in through the Sage Homes Boys & Girls Club of Wellington won’t just support children and their families; it will be good for all communities. It will be good for all of Colorado. It will make a difference in our future.”
She emphasized that Club is a “great environment filled with trust” and acknowledged that “at this point, the staff at Boys & Girls Club feel like family.” Both her daughters have been active members of the Sage Homes Wellington Club for years, and Dailey has no doubt that their time in Club has “shaped the future for my daughters.”
Dailey underscored her support of bipartisan funding that will, among other academic priorities, include investment in after-school programming like BGCLC, stating that “my family has been fortunate to be a part of this community and I would love to see these opportunities extended to more families in Colorado.”
“I don’t think people realize how affordable it is,” Dailey commented in reference to our minimal fees. Funding and support from government, foundations and businesses, partnerships, and individuals help us to keep our programming affordable and our mission in motion!
