About STEAM

Why STEAM?

STEAM, formally known as STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, arts and math. Studies have shown higher retention rates when arts are applied to STEM. As a nation, youth proficiency in STEAM subjects are dropping. According to the U.S. Department of Education, only 16 percent of American high school seniors are proficient in mathematics and interested in a STEAM career. Among those who do go on to pursue a college major in the STEAM fields, only about half choose to work in a related career. The United States is falling behind internationally, ranking 25th in mathematics and 17th in science among industrialized nations. STEAM education is closely linked with our nation’s economic prosperity in the modern global economy; strong STEAM skills are a central element of a well-rounded education and essential to productive citizenship. STEAM related careers are projected to increase significantly both in number and pay.

Academic success is a priority outcome of the Boys & Girls Club of Larimer County. STEAM provides opportunities for youth to engage in activities that can help  them with academic achievement and encourage furthering their education in science, technology, engineering, arts and math.

Goals:

Create engagement and enthusiasm towards the STEAM subjects

Show career opportunities in STEAM areas

Increase knowledge in STEAM subjects

Increase STEAM exposure and awareness within the community

Also to allow the members to have fun while learning about STEAM subjects!

Program Quotes:

“Angry Birds was the best part of STEAM for far, we got to knock stuff over," Kaylie, 11.

“Being a part of STEAM team has showed me how fun science can be," Adrian, 13.

“Observing the excitment from our members around science, technology, engineering and math when they are involved in an activity is so awesome," Kathi Wright, Executive Director, Boys & Girls Club of Larimer County.
